The COVID-19 pandemic has caused toxic stress impacting the mental and emotional health and well-being of youth. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data shows that 37.1% of high school students experienced poor mental health during the pandemic. COVID-19 stress could lead to future risk behaviors and adverse health outcomes requiring state government support. The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) convened an advisory committee to identity effective state cross-sector strategies to improve youth behavioral health outcomes through the school system. This webinar will be accompanied by the release of a national report outlining effective strategies for addressing youth behavioral health in school settings.

During the webinar, advisory committee members will address promising strategies such as enhancing Medicaid services in schools, using a comprehensive mental health framework, increasing data driven action, and leveraging federal investments in schools. Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention representatives will also highlight a state example of how data can be used to drive partnerships and state programs.

This webinar and accompanying report will equip participants with knowledge and tools to address youth behavioral health through the following objectives:
• Increase knowledge about essential school behavioral health policies and programs.
• Share an effective example of state cross-sector collaborations to improve youth behavioral health.
